Between the meditative music, essential oils and soothing ambiance, my stress faded away the moment I stepped into the room. As a newcomer to Reiki, I was excited to have my first experience with Yoga Instructor and Reiki Practitioner Kara Gumiela. I’ve attended Kara’s beach yoga classes and love the way she teaches – her meditative approach is a testament to her gifts as a healer. Kara begins and ends each class with a positive affirmation, so everyone leaves feeling empowered!
Before diving into the details of the session, first things first: Reiki 101. What it Reiki? What are the health benefits?
Reiki is an energy therapy that’s been around for thousands of years, originating from the Japanese words “rei” (universal) and “ki” (life energy). It’s a type of healing that involves the transference of universal energy from the practitioner’s hands to the patient. It improves the flow of energy around the body, promoting relaxation and reducing pain.
To start the session, Kara put a blanket over my body and a sleep mask over my eyes. Similar to her yoga class, she started our session with an inspirational message about keeping my heart and mind open to receive miracles. So perfect. Anyone who reads Maybe It’s Just Me knows I’m all about having an optimistic attitude.
Next, Kara rubbed essential oils between her hands and placed them on different parts of my body. First, my head, then over my ears and shoulders down to my feet. The heat from her hands and scent of the essential oils instantly relaxed me and I felt lighter – not just mentally, but also energetically. It was like she was slowly taking away all of the pain and tension in my body. The music playing in the background also set the mood, putting me in a peaceful headspace.
She ended the session with another affirmation about letting go of what is no longer serving me and creating space for something better. At the end of the 40 minutes, I felt like she gave me a full body reset. Refreshed, recharged, and ready to let the good vibes in!
